I tweaked the design

March 12, 2006 by Michael Boyle

I tweaked the design

around here in the past couple of days. I migrated the whole layout to use (close to) standard Movable Type templates, and in so doing made a few other subtle changes. In so doing I was able to (finally) migrate my old and neglected Words page to the current design. It had been stuck for some time in a previous generation.

Design note: the p:first-child selector is critical for me to keep my strange “Title-as-beginning-of-post” approach. Tech note: I still haven’t been able to get the freaking MT search going. I used to use an external service but I’d prefer not to continue. But the Search is down as the cgi doesn’t seem to load. Strange.

On Wednesdays I teach

March 9, 2006 by Michael Boyle

On Wednesdays I teach

my class at McGill, commuting all the way from Ottawa to do so. One of the habits I have gotten into is to drive down early in the afternoon (class starts at 6) and spend the afternoon at Laika. This gives me the opportunity to have a real meal before class (hence avoiding junk food later in the evening), but it also (and more importantly, really) allows me to spend some time in one of my favourite spots. And, pretty much every week, that means I get to meet and/or spend time with another interesting Montrealer involved in pushing the net in important directions.

Yesterday I had just finished lunch and a coffee when Mike popped by and introduced me to Hugh McGuire, who is the founder of LibriVox, a project devoted to recording chapters of public-domain literature, providing an important spoken-word archive of timeless material on the Internet.

Being a long-time skier

February 12, 2006 by Michael Boyle

Being a long-time skier

and one-time ski racer, the Winter Olympics is a highlight every 4 years that it rolls around again. I am most interested in the alpine skiing events, but I can’t help but get interested in all of the pomp surrounding the event as well. Since the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, special attention has been paid to the Canadian team’s uniform. That year, and in 2002 (as well as in the Summer Games), Roots has set the bar pretty high, eschewing the traditional (silly) faux-native themes for a slick collection that was the talk of the Games. This year, the contract went to the Hudson’s Bay Company, one of the oldest retailers in the world – but a company that has been mired with problems and was recently sold to an American investor.

I’m really curious to know how HBC got the contract, because the clothes are in stores and the reviews are in, and it’s pretty clear that a) The Bay was overdue to be sold, b) the company has been reduced to little more than a discount store that has no business trying to design an original line, and c) someone thought, incorrectly, that re-creating the success Roots had should be a pretty simple job.

I visited the HBC Olympic shop around Christmas time, and I can personally attest to the fact that although HBC managed to retain some sense of style around this year’s Olympic uniforms, they obviously had little clue about what they were doing. Once you see the clothes up close, it is obvious that they have been manufactured with the absolute cheapest junk materials they could source. The nylon in the ski jackets has no “hand” at all and is shinier and more plastic than anything I have seen since the 70s. The “fleece” toques are not made with anything resembling quality polar fleece, and the logos are in some kind of rubbery substance that will clearly crack and peel within weeks.

Hopefully the sale of HBC will help it reclaim its status in Canada – because if the Olympic line was a Hail Mary pass to try and reclaim some relevance, it will likely be a major failure.

Christmas tree

Christmas tree

This is the first year that we’ve done our own Christmas tree. In the past, we were always travelling to see family over Christmas, but this year we’re staying put, so we got our own tree.

We went out on Sunday to a tree cutting place but we didn’t have the heart to cut a living tree so we ended up buying one pre-cut. Except for the one that our friends cut down, which was lovely, all of the pre-cut trees were nicer anyhow.

So far we’ve been lucky – the dogs have hardly noticed the tree. That might change once we get some gifts spread around the bottom, though.

One of my favourite

November 16, 2005 by Michael Boyle

One of my favourite

writers when I was doing my Master’s degree was Vine Deloria Jr., whose writings taught me many things about Indian identity and politics that were essential for my academic and personal development. I learned this morning that Vine Deloria died on Sunday in Golden, CO. Yet another truly original voice that shall be heard no more.
