The New York Times

The New York Times

is running an editorial on yesterday’s ruling by the Supreme Court in the US on material that looks like, but is not, child pornography: Free Speech in Cyberspace. “These are critical times for establishing the scope of our freedoms on the Internet.” For better or worse, by default the US Court will be establishing those freedoms for many of us, not just Americans.

Now this is what

October 3, 2001 by Michael Boyle

I want from a computer OS: BlogScript, a script that allows me to post anything to my Blogger site from a menu that’s always available. To me, this is what it’s all about. An OS that lets anyone plug into it. An OS that is built from the ground up understanding that the internet is there, and that it will often be part of it. And always-on networking at a reasonable rate to make that true.

It may seem that I’m going overboard here, but I don’t think so. I’m not saying, “Wow. So wacky, who knew [boggle]?!?!” I just feel happy that finally something is going as far as I need it in the direction I want. They’ve made an OS that, with other elements easily put together, allows me to express myself as I choose, with no encumbrances.

Fifteen years

August 31, 2001 by Michael Boyle

ago next week, in September, 1986, I started my university career at McGill University. That was when I first moved to the city I’ve made my home, and became, eventually, one of the most important turning points in my life. Coincidentally, next week I return to McGill, this time to teach a class in the graduate certificate program in e-commerce. I’m teaching one section of the Internet Design and Analysis course (with Ed Bilodeau, who founded the initial version of the course). That means two things: first, it’s kind of cool to be associating myself with McGill in a formal manner again, and second, I’ve been incredibly busy preparing, and falling slightly behind schedule… so this space may be a little sparse in the next while.
