So, prompted by such

March 9, 2001 by Michael Boyle

pleasant folks as Zeldman, eric costello, and Owen Briggs, I’ve been experimenting extensively with CSS-only layouts. I started working on a new project, but decided that since it wasn’t “fixed” it was too easy just to change what I wanted to do if I couldn’t get something to go just how I wanted.

So I started converting this yellow monstrosity instead. With a model to work to, it brought a lot more discipline. In any case, I got the whole thing converted in no time flat (thanks to the people that are following this stuff closely and writing about it) – except for one thing – I can’t seem to pin the right hand yellow panel to the side of the browser window. As well, the three columns just end when they end – I can’t extend the left and right to the bottom of the browser window. I’ve tried every combination of margin: 0px and whatnot I can think of.

When I do get it together I think I’m going to move to the new style of code for this site. It’s much simpler, much smaller, more fluid and easier to work with. Even if NS 4 people can’t participate on an equal footing – I’m 90% sure it’s worth it.

little piles of excellent words over at Cardigan Industries. The piece to which I link, as prompted by Jeffrey Zeldman, is a particularly tart piece about a man who, if I knew him personally, I’m quite sure would be my nemesis – Mr Martin Amis.

The Zeldman mentions that

February 8, 2001 by Michael Boyle

The Zeldman mentions that Netscape 6.01 has been released, but also that it is incompatible with ATM on the Mac. From the release notes: “There is a known conflict with Adobe Type Manager, which causes windows to appear blank. Workaround: Uninstall ATM before you start Netscape 6.”

Uh, yeah. Hmmm. By my compass, releasing software that is incompatible with ATM is like releasing nothing at all. I don’t know of anyone who runs their Mac without ATM installed. Thanks guys, see you when you get that sorted out.

Zeldman has found

January 15, 2001 by Michael Boyle

Zeldman has found a site for something called the Health and Racquet Club Group. When you go to the site, however, all you get is a page that says “You have been directed to this page because of the use of an old browser…” and suggests that you use a browser that supports web standards. People have been trying to get the real site to load using any number of browsers – it won’t load the real thing under my IE5/Mac – but everyone gets the same message. Which suggests to me that it might be a mild hoax, a bit of a media hack – but if it is, it’s pretty oblique.
