And so a hectic holidays comes to an end…

And so a hectic holidays comes to an end…

I haven’t posted in ages, but luckily that’s because I’ve had a super-long Christmas-thru-New-Year vacation. I spent the first week – 20th to 27th – mostly relaxing and doing family stuff up at Mont Tremblant for Christmas, then back to Montreal where we hosted a party and then off to Quebec City for a splendid New Year’s Eve with friends at a dinner and another party later on.

Things I’ve learned over the holidays: our dog is a great tracker of large and small animals in the brush, and loves the snow though bred for the savannah; sparkling cider from the Eastern Townships of Quebec is really excellent with dessert; people from France have rarely had good California wines, and so it is easy to impress them with a half decent red; Hilton Hotels welcomes dogs, making travel quite a bit easier; and I finally learned that All-Season radial tires simply aren’t up to snuff in the Canadian winter.

Things to look forward to in 2003: following through on the plans of 2002. We’re closing the deal on the house we bought a couple weeks ago in March, getting married in April, and then moving into aforementioned house in May. I think that’s enough for a pretty complete year and that’s just the first five months!

Dear but obviously deluded MJ

Dear but obviously deluded MJ

suggests that all dogs descended from three original Eve dogs, but then the poor fellow refers to the Pug as the most noble and perfect breed. While it is true that his Jack is a handsome beast, it is certainly a stretch to consider the Pug the noblest of them all when there are Basenjis in the world. Specifically, the Basenji to the right, named Jordie.

I’ve been away for a while

October 2, 2002 by Michael Boyle

I’ve been away for a while

but I’m back now. I didn’t actually go anywhere, but life caught up with me and I found myself very very busy and something had to give. Work is busy, it’s a lot of work to raise a puppy, my moonlighting gig at McGill is a lot of work as well. So I took a break to recharge a bit and take care of other things. Now, back to the blog.

To kick thinks off, there’s an OS X conference on now and yesterday they had a Digital Rights panel that was blogged by Glenn Fleishman. One thing Glenn wrote points to something I have been looking at for ages: “Publishing is aggregation. People will re-emerge as publishers. Will Hollywood be the publishers of the future or will someone else?” I think that we’d all do very well to pay special attention to how copyright works for anthologies. It’s a double-edged sword – you can own a copyright on the collection itself even if you don’t own the rights to the component stories (though you must have permission).
