but Tom Coates continues to do some of the heavy thinking required to consider some of the recent innovations in new-ish webstuff. This time it’s about tagging: Two cultures of fauxonomies collide. What’s refreshing about Coates’ writing is that while it’s not academic in nature (much more accessible and not nearly as onanistic as much of the academic work in the domain), neither is it obsessed with the commercial side of things – his posts aren’t about the next business model or monetizing X or Y.

of today’s announcements from Apple at the WWDC is buried in most stories. In the News.com story linked above it doesn’t come out until the end of the second page. To wit, Phil Schiller has said that there won’t be anything done to prevent someone from running Windows on an Intel-Apple box. At the same time, Apple’s still a hardware company, so you can be sure that Tiger/Leopard will only work on Apple boxes. What that means, potentially, is that if you buy an Apple machine you can run whatever you want – Linux, OS X, or Windows – whereas if you buy a random-PC-manufacturer’s box you’d be restricted to Windows and/or Linux. Sounds like a pretty good strategy to me.

in the Canadian Parliament, now it seems that backbench Liberal MP Pat O’Brien has left the Liberal Party over the same-sex marriage issue. It seems that he’s upset over the apparent fast-track that Bill C-38 is getting. Amazing stuff.

by now if you follow the World of Macintosh, John Gruber has the best coverage of the Apple-Intel stories/rumours. I like his final analysis: “Heres my bet: Intel is going to produce PowerPC chips for Apple. But Im only betting one dollar.” Sounds about right to me.

I’m going to miss most in Montreal are summer evenings on the terrace at the Bistro Duluth. For the last ten years or so the Bistro has been a mainstay of my neighbourhood routine here on the Plateau, the location of countless 5-à-7s, impromptu dinners, hungover breakfasts, and late-night snacks. I don’t think I’ve ever been there and not seen and flagged down a friend walking by, and at least half the time whoever it is stops by and joins the table.

The nice thing about Bistro Duluth is that they have slowly but surely improved the whole offering. A few years ago the bar was pretty run down. the menu was over-reliant on mediocre versions Portuguese standbys, and the service was slack at best – whereas now the Portuguese cuisine has improved to the point that the Bistro rivals local champ Chez Doval in terms of sheer taste and quality, and at the same time the list of portos available, microbrews on tap, and even the wine list have all increased in quantity and quality.

Last night we stopped by and I had my usual Portuguese mussels and Nadia had a great red tuna steak, accompanied by a peppy bottle of Vinho verde. And, as should be the case at any good neighbourhood restaurant, the management gets to know the locals and provides great service.
