In the spirit

February 16, 2001 by Michael Boyle

of upgrading, I just installed Netscape 6.01 here and I must admit that I’m very impressed with the strides they’ve made in such a short time. 6.0 was pretty much unuseable for me, but this version is much better. It doesn’t disactivate my scroll wheel, for one thing. There are still bugs – textarea boxes seem particularly flaky – but the trend is right.

Whoops. No post button in Blogger under 6.01.

Time to upgrade?

February 16, 2001 by Michael Boyle

I did it long ago, and have been proselytizing for people to upgrade (usually to IE5/Mac from NS4.7x) for months. Now, the Web Standards Project is Fighting for Standards in our Browsers by encouraging people to upgrade to standards-compliant browsers.

the good folks over at OpenCOLA: the OpenCola.com soft drink formula. Noted with interest: the typically Canadian use of the term “soft drink”. I assume that’s one Cory Doctorow’s influences. Be sure to read the following: “this is *not* the recipe for “OpenCola” — that is, the canned beverage that you may have received at a trade show or similar venue. Making canned cola requires millions of dollars in abstruse gear and manufactory gizmos. Making that kind of cola is unrealistic. You need to manage your expectations better. Grow up already. This is a kitchen-sink recipe that you can make all on your own.”

: Notes from the O’Reilly P2P Conference. Interesting stuff. P2P is very interesting, and the trick for me is that it seems that the flexibility of the very idea is built in. In many ways it’s just restating the original vision of the web, which has ended up being hampered by the narrower vision of the first couple of waves of development. I would hate to see a proscriptive definition of P2P overtake the openness of the concept.
