Security Systems Standards and Certification Act from Wired News’ Declan McCullagh: Hollywood Loves Hollings’ Bill.

“If this would go forward, it would be a huge gift for the fair-use community. It would be right up there with Sklyarov,” says Jaszi, talking about the outcry the DMCA prosecution of Russian programmer Dmitry Sklyarov has caused. “It would be an amazing mobilizing tool.”

In all the recent discussion

July 16, 2001 by Michael Boyle

about CSS and adapting web coding practices to adhere to the W3C standards, I haven’t seen much mention of the excellent software (and site, with mucho info) made by Westciv Webware. I don’t code enough to keep everything in my brain through sheer practice, and their site has been my saviour more than once.

I’m in the midst of some

February 26, 2001 by Michael Boyle

pretty big decisions – one involving starting up a consulting company with some colleagues, one involving moving to the other side of the table, figuratively speaking.

The latter brings up lots of questions though. People (designers, web developers) always complain about how clueless clients are. What if the client isn’t clueless? What if your client knows exactly what can and can’t be done, what the best approach would be, how much it should cost? What if you client has a long background in web design, web coding, content development for the web, and the like? What if I suggest that the code be done to (say) W3C standards – or at least pay attention to the current developments on that side of things?

Does that still look like a client you want to work for? Or is that still a nightmare client? I’d let you do your thing – but cut a corner, and I’ll see it. I’ll look at the code and expect it to be professionally done. Still a good client?

A fear I have is that although clueless clients are a horror, so might clued-in clients be to many web designers and web developers. Can you deal with someone who knows his stuff?

Time to upgrade?

February 16, 2001 by Michael Boyle

I did it long ago, and have been proselytizing for people to upgrade (usually to IE5/Mac from NS4.7x) for months. Now, the Web Standards Project is Fighting for Standards in our Browsers by encouraging people to upgrade to standards-compliant browsers.

Zeldman has found

January 15, 2001 by Michael Boyle

Zeldman has found a site for something called the Health and Racquet Club Group. When you go to the site, however, all you get is a page that says “You have been directed to this page because of the use of an old browser…” and suggests that you use a browser that supports web standards. People have been trying to get the real site to load using any number of browsers – it won’t load the real thing under my IE5/Mac – but everyone gets the same message. Which suggests to me that it might be a mild hoax, a bit of a media hack – but if it is, it’s pretty oblique.
