At the Social Software Weblog

At the Social Software Weblog

I found (well, plasticbag.org found it and then I went and read it too) the first intelligent, non-reactionary response to the Flickr/Yahoo sign-in flap: Flickr and Yahoo: please support open identity standards.

I still wonder where the FAQ is about the change…

UnFriendster. There are lots of reasons to quit Friendster, this latest one is simply the most recent good excuse to even take the time to bother.

“Social Networking”

June 3, 2004 by Michael Boyle

“Social Networking”

is such a mess. LinkedIn makes it almost impossible to find anyone you know or to contact them when you have. Orkut is a toy with amateurish online forum offerings. But Ryze is by far the worst of them all. It is no more than the Classmates.com of the space, with endless pitches (luckily you can control the email you receive), but with no ability to browse people. They’re basically trying to force users to upload their Outlook address book, which is a joke. And the users themselves – it’s a bunch of Herbalife and other pseudo-pyramid losers trying to hook people into a scam. Screw that.

Jeffrey Veen:

Will you be my friend? Trying to tease something out of the void that the social networking sites have become. So far it seems that the folks at Flickr are the only ones who have a clue. The rest of them – Tribe, LinkedIn, Friendster, Orkut – seem to have a classic case of high-ego startup syndrome, suggesting that they actually believe they’re smarter than everyone else and can actually do it all themselves with limited if any interoperability. I hope to be proven wrong.
