Very sad news today

July 3, 2001 by Michael Boyle

from the world of Quebec literature. Mordecai Richler died this morning at the Montreal General Hospital. It’s ironic, and sad, that one of the greatest writers ever to come from Quebec is massively disdained by much of the population here.

I don’t have many personal memories of the man. We never met, though I used to see him quite often when I worked at Concordia. What I do remember are his words – vivid, funny, wry novels that captured the spirit of a neighbourhood, and city, that I have made my home. And even 40 years since his first great novel, shades of his Montreal are still evident.

: they’re wrapping personal email with ads before sending it along to the intended recipient. How fucked is that?

Part of the fun

June 20, 2001 by Michael Boyle

of installing a new OS – and a radically different one at that – has been digging through my old files. There are whole folders full of stuff that I literally hadn’t opened in years, let alone used. One of the things I found was the local version of my first ever personal site, which luckily I’d commented pretty well, including the date of first publication and of the last change I made. And it turns out I’ve had a personal site on the web for over 5 1/2 years now.

I’m going to try, in the near future, to make some screenshots of old versions of the precursor to mikel.org – they’re embarrassingly ugly, but kind of fun as well.

There’s a post

May 30, 2001 by Michael Boyle

I want to write, except that writing it will draw attention to something that doesn’t need attention drawn to it, and is so impeccably beautiful, but also terribly sad and most certainly true, that I feel that making the link will trivialize it. Which is a complicated way of saying that sometimes, even today, I can be deeply moved by something I read on the web.
