Another Montreal company at Demo

January 17, 2008 by Michael Boyle

There was big news late last week that I haven’t yet mentioned here: Montreal’s Standout Jobs is Launching at DEMO 08, to be held in Palm Springs at the end of January. I was at DEMOfall in 2006 in San Diego and having been there, I know just how special an event it is. For all of the cynicism that exists in the tech/startup world, Chris Shipley and the whole DEMO team really do a great job at providing an amazing platform for any company whose up to the task of showing it, live, in just 6 minutes.

Congratulations to Ben, Fred, and Austin and the whole gang at Standout Jobs!

DEMOfall 07 starts today

in San Diego. Last year at this time I was in San Diego putting the finishing touches on the demo for Trigence, the Ottawa software company I was working for on contract. So, having been there, I wish all the DEMOing companies the best of luck – it’s going to be a rush. DEMO and DEMOfall are certainly among the best tech conferences out there. Here’s this edition’s list of participating demonstrators.

by Heather’s site yesterday just as I left work, or I wouldn’t have known that she did a TV demo of Photoshop Tennis last night. You can see the match yourself – it’s up on the PShop Tennis home base.

They’ve killed someone

July 20, 2001 by Michael Boyle

. A protester has been killed anti-globalization demonstrations in Genoa, where the G7/8 are currently meeting. The press goes to great lengths to mark the protesters as “anarchists” and to suggest that everyone’s violent, but you know what? I don’t buy it. There’s no justification for that. Damage to property doesn’t justify killing a protester.

I had a rare

opportunity to see Ron Sexsmith last night at the Cabaret, a nice cozy room just down the street from me. It was great to see him live – I missed what has become a legendary show he played about 4 yrs ago at a now-defunct space called Isart. He seemed a little hemmed in by his band – his solo songs were better, and although the band was OK, they seemed to put a box around him a bit more than I would have liked. Probably just a lack of familiarity – the guitar and bass were pretty new. Incidentally, the bassist (Maury LeFoy) used to play in my friend Ian’s band, Starling.
In case it’s not obvious, I (and many others) consider Ron Sexsmith to be among the very best songwriters and performers of the past several years. You could say he’s like the demon spawn of Brian Wilson, Tom Waits (who he covered last night) and Neil Young (maybe), but that wouldn’t be quite right. I can leave his first CD (or his third, for that matter) in my car for weeks and listen to it over and over – it’s never boring. Just in case it wasn’t clear.
