prepared for just how great the Patti Smith show was going to be. I mean, I know she’s an important historical figure, and still very vital and all that. But I was amazed at how legitimate a punk she still is (very, most should take lessons), and how un-poseurish her art-rock-chick thing is. There’s nothing nostalgic about a Patti Smith show – it’s happening right now. Note: only about three people in the world could open a rock show with an extended Ginsberg quote and not look completely foolish.

Yesterday was Canada

Day – not a huge event here in Montreal. Today is the championship game of Euro 2000 between France and Italy, a much bigger event in this town. For some reason, that makes sense to me. For my part, I just hope Italy doesn’t succeed in making it as boring a game as they’d like.

I found out last night

that Patti Smith is playing tonight at Metropolis. I am completely and utterly fascinated, amazed, and impressed by Patti Smith. I’m trying to wrangle a free ticket as I write this.

story I read last weekend in Saturday Night about how to knit sweaters for penguins. You would want to knit a sweater for a penguin so that it doesn’t preen oil from an oil spill with its beak, cause it would ingest the goo and die. If/when a person cleans off such oil, they also get rid of natural feather oils, so the penguins would get cold. Hence, penguin sweaters.

the 15th anniversary party for the Montreal Mirror, the first of the 4 weeklies in Montreal. I crashed the party they had at a club called Le Swimming (not much of a feat), but I was disappointed that there weren’t any speeches or anything. They would have added life to the party, that’s for sure. A lot of people were there just to witness a faux-pas, for sure – but as it was, “nostalgic beer bash” was the operating principle. Oh well.
