From Torontoist:

From Torontoist:

Bon Cop, Bad Cop. A great video showing some, ahem, experienced protest leaders strongly suggesting that some supposed fellow protesters drop their rocks and cease being violent… until they figure out that the “protesters” in question are most likely police provocateurs trying to rile things up and create a riot. There isn’t any firm evidence at this point that the three “bad guys” were really cops, but check out the video – it’s pretty clear that they were when you see the pathetic “takedown” performed by the uniformed police once the ruse was up.

Personally I’m not surprised – I’ve been a witness to a couple of “riots” in my day and every single time the police were the aggressors.

Ch ch ch changes…

Ch ch ch changes…

Yet again I’m on the move. Not from Montreal! But I have returned to the consulting life, and I’m very excited – my services are on the market again. One of the great side-benefits so far: spending the afternoon with Nadia out and about in the city (rather than behind some desk).

If I needed a new keyboard,

August 7, 2007 by Michael Boyle

If I needed a new keyboard,

I would run to the Apple Store to buy one of the new Apple keyboards that were unveiled today. Judging by the photos, both wired and wireless models are essentially MacBook keyboards in a sleek aluminum wrapper.

Update: In Macworld, Rob Griffiths notes that he’s confused about the binary choice available between a full keyboard = wired and small = bluetooth. I have to agree – in fact, I think Apple might have gotten it exactly backwards (assuming, that is, that someone forced them to make the choice, which of course is nonsense). What’s the number one scenario in which someone would want to buy a keyboard by itself? I bet it’s someone who has a laptop that they use from a specific location regularly. That person already HAS the compact version – it’s built into their Macbook. What he or she WANTS is a full keyboard – but doesn’t want to fiddle with wires sticking out the side just to use it.

Tim Bray loves

Tim Bray loves

his Macbook: Unprofessional in Black. I love mine too, and contrary to the guy in Bray’s comments who doesn’t like the keyboard, I think the Macbook keyboard is probably the best laptop keyboard I’ve ever used (and I’ve used many, on both sides of the aisle (i.e., including other Apples, Dell, IBM/Lenovo, etc.).

Ooof. Calling Rogers is painful,

July 20, 2007 by Michael Boyle

Ooof. Calling Rogers is painful,

especially when it’s to buy a data plan from them. Nadia got a new phone yesterday – a Treo like mine – and for a device like that, a data plan is pretty important. So I called them up – knowing already what the deal on the table was – and signed up for a 3MB plan… for $25. I feel like Rogers is intentionally laughing at me or something. They invented plans in the late 90s for WAP and have kept charging people through the nose ever since.
