I liked the new story

July 11, 2001 by Michael Boyle

over at O’Reilly, Death of a Dot-Com by Shelley Powers, until the very end. She wrote in her epilogue: “So why did Skyfish.com fail? Why did any of the dot-coms fail? We stopped believing in the phenomenon, and once you stop believing, there’s no going back.” Which, you know, just doesn’t make sense.

I’m sure it has been

blogged a million times, but nonetheless the news from Redmond that manufacturers can choose to remove Microsoft products from their shipping boxes is very interesting. Only trouble is that MS has trained me very well to wait for the other shoe to drop – to hear that there’s some other “feature” that will make today’s announcement more or less moot.

Very sad news today

July 3, 2001 by Michael Boyle

from the world of Quebec literature. Mordecai Richler died this morning at the Montreal General Hospital. It’s ironic, and sad, that one of the greatest writers ever to come from Quebec is massively disdained by much of the population here.

I don’t have many personal memories of the man. We never met, though I used to see him quite often when I worked at Concordia. What I do remember are his words – vivid, funny, wry novels that captured the spirit of a neighbourhood, and city, that I have made my home. And even 40 years since his first great novel, shades of his Montreal are still evident.
