In other “gear” news,

In other “gear” news,

last week I picked up a new MacBook, which has so far impressed me as a wonderful machine. One of the best keyboards I’ve ever used on a laptop (only my old Thinkpad I used for work a couple of jobs ago compared) and the bump in screen size from the iBook 12″ is just enough to make it workable for everyday use. I’ll probably get an external monitor to go with it later, but even by itself it’s great.

We’re drastically simplifying our whole “gear” life here in the house – Nadia is going to use the last-gen iBook we have and we’re getting rid of all our other computers – my Mini, her eMac, and my large old-school CRT that was still on my desk about 7 years since its purchase.

We’re officially a hybrid family over here, now that Martine has a 20″ iMac. Actually, we’re 2/3 Mac now, when you consider the iBook (although we only use that as a Web terminal). On the other hand, she still has her old Dell fired up during the migration (which is not going all that smoothly), plus I still have my Compaq notebook, although I don’t use it (800×600? Forget it.)

I’m thinking we should do a “simplify” thing too, but with her main machine a Mac and my main machine a Windoze, I think things might actually get more complicated!

Mikel: Let me know how things go if you migrate your Treo phone and the Palm Desktop to the Macbook. Yowser. The desktop software looks awful and is not as customizable as it was on the pc. I spent hours trying to get the Palm to Hotsync via Bluetooth, without any luck. (Could be an OS X, latest version related problem.) I finally got it to work with the usb cable but even that was complicated! I’ve got 5 years of my life in that Palm data so I’m reluctant to just switch to iCal or something like that.

    Howdy!

What are you planning on doing with the old gear?

I stumbled upon your site in my search for web development as well as a few other choics topics such as Jean Baudrillard. So, I read you have a mac mini you are planning to get rid of. I could certainly put it to very very good use. I simply find myself in lack of funds and would prove a great choice to give this to if you are so inclined. Drop me a line and we could make arrangements: inkwellspring@yahoo.com
    Cheers,
    Henry
