Michael Arrington at Techcrunch

Michael Arrington at Techcrunch

has the story that protagonist Evan Williams broke on his own site yesterday evening: Odeo Bought Back From Investors. I think it’s great that he was able to do this before more money became involved than he could deal with responsibly – because this is clearly what was needed in order to get things back on track.

Steven Berlin Johnson has formally

announced the launch of Outside. In, a site designed to, “collectively build the geographic Web, neighborhood by neighborhood.”

It’s a shame that Canada wasn’t in scope for the alpha release, because there are large communities of people here that would jump on this very quickly. Nevertheless – and assuming a relatively quick extension to the Great White North – it’s an intriguing idea that will be even better the more it catches on.

In Boing Boing today,

Xeni Jardin linked to an article in the IHT: Laptops, please: US law permits search, seizure at the border. On my way home from a recent trip from the US, I had this experience at Canadian customs. I was flagged by the guy and later he made a cursory look-see in my bag, he was most interested in the contents of my laptop. He was pretty chatty and said that one of their main missions at Canadian customs now was porn (along with guns and large sums of cash), which presumably was what he was checking on my machine.

It’s early for a Saturday

morning, but I’m already moving – specifically, I’m sitting in a conference room at a hotel here in Ottawa listening in on the Alternative Telecommunications Policy Forum. There are a lot of very strong thinkers and activists here – people whose names I’ve been hearing and whose papers I’ve been reading for years. I’ll be reporting back here with any findings I have in the next few hours.
