70 Facts

about Leonard Cohen, who is about to turn 70. One they missed, and that I am reasonably sure is not apocryphal, is that he still owns a house in Montreal, and the house serves as a local Zen Center. [link via Kate’s Montreal Weblog]

I’m sure you’ve seen those history posters on St. Lawrence

Blvd. I noticed today that the one on Schreter’s has a bit

    about Leonard Cohen.

In the early nineties, I was walking up there and as I get

to Marie-Anne I for some reason glance into the bar at that

corner. It was spring, the glass was open. I spy Leonard

Cohen. And just as soon as I do, he nods in my direction,

almost as if to acknowledge me. Wow, Leonard Cohen noticed

me. As I thought it over later, I realized it had to be

a defense mechanism on his part. He saw that I recognized him,

and by nodding, he likely prevents me going over and gushing.

I wouldn’t have, because I’d not have anything worth saying,

but this actually makes a better story over a decade later.
