I’ve neglected to comment

June 24, 2001 by Michael Boyle

on a whole bunch of stories lately that I think are important and/or interesting – chief among these being the Smart Tags feature that’s being deployed in new versions of key MS software. Some disagree, but I am of the opinion that this feature hugely oversteps the boundaries of what’s appropriate or acceptible for a software company to do, particularly in the browser where the software is responsible for presenting other people’s writing.

As one would expect, the gang at ALA have published an excellent analysis of the feature by Chris Kaminsky. To link or not to link, and to what, is an editorial decision, period. And the decision to do so rests with the people involved in the editorial process, and nowhere else. I don’t get what’s so hard about that concept for some.

Part of the fun

June 20, 2001 by Michael Boyle

of installing a new OS – and a radically different one at that – has been digging through my old files. There are whole folders full of stuff that I literally hadn’t opened in years, let alone used. One of the things I found was the local version of my first ever personal site, which luckily I’d commented pretty well, including the date of first publication and of the last change I made. And it turns out I’ve had a personal site on the web for over 5 1/2 years now.

I’m going to try, in the near future, to make some screenshots of old versions of the precursor to mikel.org – they’re embarrassingly ugly, but kind of fun as well.

This is so cool

: WhatTheFont will interpret an image of text and return a list of possible fonts used to make it. It didn’t work very well on my little “mikel.org” logo above – doubtless because of the yellow line underneath – but still, it’s pretty cool. [via caroline]

A rare link

via Scripting News (not that I find the site uninteresting, it’s just that it is usually out of step with my focus): Three Myths of XML by Kendall Grant Clark. A very tidy debunking of some of the more outrageous (and ahistorical) myths proposed by XML proponents. If I were ever to re-write my Master’s thesis (which is doubtful), this essay would become a central reference.
