Not much went on

December 9, 2000 by Michael Boyle

here yesterday – it ended up being a hyper work day. I woke up early and since a) I had a ton to do, and, b) I have office keys, I went in to work at about 7am. I hoped that I would be able to cut out early to get ready for our office Christmas/5th Anniversary party – but alas it wasn’t to be so.

But the party was fantastic anyway – we took over the largest and nicest club in Montreal for the night. It was pretty swanky, but although we’re getting bigger and stuff, we’re still a very DIY company. So no polished corporate promo stuff to get everyone pumped – just low-key, booze-fueled fun. Pass the tylenol.

the 5K contest has landed at a new home with a brand new website. It’s now called the5k.org and it’s apparently a “Metafilter network member site”. The site itself looks really great – particularly the contest participant pages. On a single page you get a description of the site, a button with which to launch it in a new window, a way to initiate discussion about the entry inline, and a rating box on the right. [via Ed]

December 6 is a sad day

December 6, 2000 by Michael Boyle

. It was 11 years ago today that Marc Lepine strode into the Ecole Polytechnique, the engineering school at the Universite de Montreal, and proceeded to separate the men from the women. Then he shot and killed 14 of the women before taking his own life. Since then, many people have observed a National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women.

Marc Lepine wasn’t simply a madman – he was a calculating killing machine on that day, bent on punishing “feminists” for his failures in the world.

But don’t remember him on this day, remember his victims: Genevieve Bergeron, 21: Helene Colgan, 23; Nathalie Croteau, 23; Barbara Daigneault, 22; Anne-Marie Edward, 21; Maud Haviernick, 29; Barbara Maria Klucznik, 31; Maryse Leclair, 23; Annie St-Arneault, 23; Michele Richard, 21; Maryse Laganiere, 25; Anne-Marie Lemay, 22; Sonia Pelletier, 28; Annie Turcotte, 21.

And remember the horrible toll that is taken by violence against women throughout our society.

Feed is running

December 6, 2000 by Michael Boyle

an interesting essay on movie blood and guts in cultural/historical perspective by Lauren Sandler. About 3/4 of the way down the page is an underused sort of hyperlink – to pop-ups containing additional notes on the text.

One could very easily make a compelling case that the web isn’t truly hypertext at all. Or that it’s only narrowly so, not deeply hypertextual.
