This new Napster

November 2, 2000 by Michael Boyle

-Bertelsmann (BMG) deal is pretty cool, and if it’s a blanket deal including “immunity” for songs already being served up by Napster users then I think it stands a good chance of success. I would definitely pay $60 for the ability to continue to use Napster in a relatively unfettered way. Essentially, under this plan Napster becomes a personal copyright clearinghouse, serving consumers as ASCAP or SOCAN serve radio stations and others who present music commercially.

The problem, though, is the same as when a newspaper I used to freelance for decided it wanted to put its content online. The problem was they hadn’t bought that right from me – they’d only bought the right to first publication. I would have been more than happy to allow them to put it online as well, or in a CD-ROM archive – but my price for such usage is different in that case – and they weren’t interested in paying me that rate, they wanted the same rate. So the question that remains to me is – are the artists going to be paid by Bertelsmann for this? Or is it just added to their deals for no additional consideration?

And now it’s 2:15

and it’s all weird. I wasn’t at home to change my clocks, so they’re all an hour slow, and anyhow I’m 3 hrs behind due to this wonderful Canadian invention, the Time Zone. I did find it interesting to note down which websites I visited first – this being my first look at any weblogs in a few days. I looked at mostly serious issues-oriented sites first – PeterMe, Zeldman (to whom I’ve neglected to send my condolences), CamWorld, and Evhead. Next were Montrealers – Ed’s nicely redesigned Calebos.org, Aaron’s site, and David’s. Last were honourary/former Montrealer Heather’s Harrumph and Derek Powazek‘s site. And now to bed. Because I have a very big meeting tomorrow with a man who might win a Nobel Prize for medicine soon – a huge figure we’re doing some work with. Nope, not intimidated at all.

Just back from

November 2, 2000 by Michael Boyle

Vancouver, where it turned out that a) I didn’t have enough spare time to even look at anything on the net, let alone post anything; and, b) where my road ISP’s line was busy every single time I tried to dial up. At the conference I was at I had a nice connection, but no time to do anything with it. Vancouver’s nice enough, but not really my kind of place. Oh – and if you sent me email in the last few days I’ll be getting to it soon.

Damn – I wanted

October 27, 2000 by Michael Boyle

to cut out early from work and go up to the Electronic Arts thing at the Biennale de Montreal 2000. I got an email from the nice people at Rhizome yesterday announcing that they were around at 2 this afternoon. But I’m leaving for Vancouver tomorrow and have a ton to do – so I can’t make it.
