I’m not a big fan

May 23, 2000 by Michael Boyle

of ice cream, but occasionally it is exactly the perfect thing. Tonight I went to the depanneur (corner store) and found that they’re selling Ben & Jerry’s now, which is a Very New Thing in Canada. We’ve had a B&J shop on Maisonneuve for years, but at the grocery? Radical.

But that pales in comparison with the secret mission I’m going on tomorrow, which is also ice cream related. If I achieve success, I’ll post pics and details.

Privacy legislation coming?

May 23, 2000 by Michael Boyle

The FTC in the US has published a report calling for legislation to address internet privacy issues. Self-regulation is a sham. We can expect the screaming and hollering in response any second now…

Another interesting entry

May 23, 2000 by Michael Boyle

in the near-constant back and forth about weblogs and their merits or lack thereof. Captain Cursor’s analysis is quite different than the one I wrote the other night, but I do agree with him that the software does play a role in defining what people do with spaces like this. I don’t really see, however, that there’s anything intrinsic to either Blogger or Manila that suggests shorter posts or links as the jumping-off point for the stuff a weblogger writes. In fact, out of the box it’s probably easier to use Blogger to publish longer pieces with no links. And Manila, although well configured for weblogs at Userland’s publicly hosted sites, is still most at home at a site-wide content management tool, at least if Frontier 5 (its predecessor, the last version I used extensively) was any indication. The influence of Blogger and Manila, to me, has a more important influence on the answer to the preliminary question – will I or won’t I?

The one consolation

May 23, 2000 by Michael Boyle

after reading an article like this is that companies have been trying stuff like this, and more to the point, hack business writers have been crawling over each other to write about the Next Big Thing, for ages now. But it hasn’t really happened yet. Same with the elusive “community”. The only real successes are those that do it for its own sake, not to help sell something else. Let’s root for more failures! I found a great

May 23, 2000 by Michael Boyle

site called Content Rules via Zeldman last night. I’ve been working with these issues for a while, but it will be nice to read some other points of view. Oh, and they have a pretty neat survey done in flash as well. Boring topic for a survey, but it works well and it looks purty.
