Progress:

Massachusetts court rules ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional. But it is bad for the Democrats? Will this “prove” to the swing voter that the world is going to hell in a handbasket?

Yes, if 2004 mirrors 2000 and the key battleground are the undecided moderates — aka the soccer moms. No, if 2004 is won getting your own supporters out to vote. (Someone smart, can’t remember who (Joe Klein mebbe?) argued awhile back that 2004 will be like this. Wish I could remember where.)

(Oh, and hey Mr. Boyle! Glad to see you back (online!) Howre things?

Yeah – that’s exactly the point I was getting at. I wouldn’t suggest for a second that anyone stop trying for what I consider to be basic civil rights, or that if they do so and succeed they are in any way to blame for any outcome. At the same time, my inner analyst wants to consider the question: what if it further removes the Democrats from consideration by these swing voters? What are the collateral effects?
