Totally whacked

June 25, 2001 by Michael Boyle

: they’re wrapping personal email with ads before sending it along to the intended recipient. How fucked is that?

Zeldman you fucker. It’s an excellent, and accurate, fan letter. [via consolationchamps, a writer of which I’ve been meaning to email for a while now]

I came across

May 30, 2001 by Michael Boyle

Jon Udell’s Telling A Story – The Weblog as a Project-Management Tool through calebos.org and CamWorld in the past couple of days, and as was the case with both of them, I found the article very compelling. I’ve frankly had enough of talking and thinking about grand schemes of leveraging heavy tech in the service of getting things done. It’s far preferable, to me, to bring things to the basic level: email and a simple website. Much more than that is overkill, and mitigates against adoption of whatever tool is under consideration – which makes it (whatever “it” might be) a no-go. As the article says so clearly, the tools are secondary, and I will add, boring. It’s the work, and more importantly the people doing the work, that are important. And the quickest, easiest possible way to help that happen is the best way to try. That’s the hidden power of weblogs for personal publishing and in this context, I think.

I received an interesting

May 17, 2001 by Michael Boyle

email yesterday:

This Friday May 18th, in an unprecedented gesture, the Union des crivains du Qubec will present an evening of ENGLISH poetry and literature in performance.
The show is entitled “Howls and Whispers (Souffles et hurlements)” and it highlights a remarkable cultural breakthrough that has occurred in the spoken word scene in Montreal.
Due to pioneer work by a list of names on both sides of the linguistic divide, the scene for performance literature has become a place where English and French performers know each other, work together and share an audience – an altogether amazing event when one considers that poetry is probably the most language-specific cultural activity one can find.

The show will feature a panoply of the most interesting writers and performers in the city, including Cat Kidd and jack beets, Fortner Anderson, and musician Tom Walsh – all in one of the best locations in town.
[ahem – I should have mentioned that location – it’s at the Lion D’Or, on Ontario St. E. Did you know that Ontario St had that name before the province of Ontario did?]

Found via MetaFilter

April 19, 2001 by Michael Boyle

Found via MetaFilter: the one truly sane company with respect to trademark usage on a non-corporate website. If you’ve ever been pissed off at Mattel for closing down some little girl’s website, or if you fired off an angry email to e-Toys over their scandalous mis-handling of the ETOY matter, take a look and smile. And don’t let the bastards get you down.
