I just noticed that

I haven’t yet blogged about one of the most significant things I’ve been involved with on the net for a while: the move of the Café Utne to a new organization and a new server: The New Café. The Café is an online community that opened in 1995 and in the move, we moved over the entire archive of almost 6.5 Million posts over to the new server. There’s quite a bit of work to do yet - branding, capacity-building, and such, but that’s in the hands of a very capable General Manager so I expect all to go well in the coming weeks, months, and years.

Scroll down

to the May 29th entry over at Ed’s site, Blork Blog to read a very typical story about life here in Montreal. Even odder, Ed and I are very good friends now but in fact we first “met” online. We were both “founding” hosts at Cafe Utne. When he introduced himself in the private Hosts forum, I replied by saying, “I bet you $10 we have friends in common!” And of course we did, and our circles finally overlapped a couple of weeks later. But the overlap in the story on his site - that’s much deeper, and international to boot. Cool.

Webby nomination!

I just found out that Café Utne, a site I’ve worked on for almost 5 years, has been nominated for a Webby award in the Community category. It’s a little strange in that the category is a bit of a dog’s breakfast of totally different types of sites. But pretty cool. I’ve literally spent thousands of hours there, and it’s my primary online home. I mean, other than this!
