In other “gear” news,

last week I picked up a new MacBook, which has so far impressed me as a wonderful machine. One of the best keyboards I’ve ever used on a laptop (only my old Thinkpad I used for work a couple of jobs ago compared) and the bump in screen size from the iBook 12″ is just enough to make it workable for everyday use. I’ll probably get an external monitor to go with it later, but even by itself it’s great.

We’re drastically simplifying our whole “gear” life here in the house - Nadia is going to use the last-gen iBook we have and we’re getting rid of all our other computers - my Mini, her eMac, and my large old-school CRT that was still on my desk about 7 years since its purchase.

Ars Technica has published

a characteristically complete review of the new MacBook Pro. Looks good, though it’s going to be a while before I can join in on the fun.

I picked up my first

universal remote today - one of these: Logitech Harmony Universal Remote. The goal, of course, is to try to regain control over the proliferation of remotes on our coffee table, and I am pleased to report that it works very well and that programming the thing via the internet works and was a snap to complete. There are still some customizations that I want to implement, but you can cover the basics in a few minutes.

Sweet gadget:

Logitech Harmony 880 Advanced Universal Remote. We’ve added a fifth remote to our everyday system (though one is missing), and need two at any one time, so I think we’re in the target market.

At Engadget you can learn

how to How-To turn your iPod in to a Universal Infrared Remote Control. I didn’t even know such a thing would be possible.
